How to Change Your Name on WhatsApp
Changing your WhatsApp name takes about ten seconds, and then produces the question everybody asks next: why do my friends still see the old name? The answer is that personal WhatsApp names are mostly decorative — your contacts see whatever they saved you as. Business accounts work the opposite way, and changing one is a much bigger deal.

01Change it on AndroidTap the three dots at the top right, then Settings, then your name at the top of the screen. Tap your name again, edit it, and tap the tick or Save. The limit is 25 characters and emoji are allowed. The change is immediate.
02Change it on iPhoneTap Settings at the bottom right, then your name at the top, then Name. Edit it and tap Done. Same 25-character limit, same immediate effect. There is nothing to confirm and no review.
03Understand who actually sees itThis is the part that surprises people. Anyone who has saved your number sees the name they saved, not the one you set — your name only shows to people who have not saved you, in group chats where you are unknown to some members, and alongside your profile photo in a few places. So changing it does not update how your friends see you, and nothing you can do will, because that name lives in their phone.
04Change the name shown in your About or status insteadIf what you actually want is to show something to everyone, the About line is the field that displays to everyone regardless of whether they saved you. It is under the same Settings screen, and unlike the name it genuinely reaches your whole contact list.
05Changing a WhatsApp Business name is differentOn the WhatsApp Business app the name is your business identity and is subject to Meta’s naming rules. On the WhatsApp Business Platform it is stricter still: a change triggers a Meta review, can be refused, and there are limits on how often it can be done. Names that are generic, keyword-stuffed, in all capitals, or that contain a phone number or URL are rejected — and a name that does not match your website and other listings is the commonest refusal of all.
