What a WhatsApp link is, and the three formats that exist
A WhatsApp link — a click-to-chat link — opens a chat with a specific number when someone taps it. Neither side needs the other saved as a contact, which is the whole point: it removes the "save this number first" step that loses people between interest and first message.
There are three formats and they are not alternatives to each other in the way people assume. https://wa.me/919876543210 is the short official format and the one to use almost everywhere. https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=919876543210 is the older official format; it still works and behaves identically, and you will see it in documentation and in older embed code. The third thing people call a WhatsApp link is a group invite (chat.whatsapp.com/...), which is a different mechanism entirely — it adds someone to a group rather than opening a private chat, and it cannot be generated from a phone number.
Both click-to-chat formats are provided by Meta, not by a third party. That matters for a business link you are printing or embedding: it will not stop working because a service shut down.
Writing the number so the link actually works
This one step accounts for almost every broken WhatsApp link. Take the country code and the number, then strip everything else: no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes, no brackets, and — the one that catches most people — no leading zero on the local part.
An Indian number written 098765 43210 becomes 919876543210. A UK number written 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123, not 4407700900123. A US number written (415) 555-0132 becomes 14155550132. A UAE number written 050 123 4567 becomes 971501234567.
If the link opens and reports that the phone number shared via URL is invalid, work through it in that order: plus sign removed, spaces removed, leading zero dropped, country code present. If the format is right and it still fails, the remaining explanation is that the number has no WhatsApp account attached to it.
Pre-filling the message, and why encoding matters
Adding ?text= to the end of the link types a message into the chat box for the sender, ready to send. wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20listing opens with that sentence already written.
The message has to be percent-encoded, which is where hand-written links break. A space is %20, a comma is %2C, an ampersand is %26, and a line break is %0A. Getting one character wrong does not throw an error — it silently truncates the message at that point, so the customer sees half a sentence and you never find out. The generator above does the encoding, which is the main reason to use it rather than typing links yourself.
Keep the pre-filled text short and let it be something the reader would plausibly have written. "Hi, I would like to book an appointment" works. A paragraph of marketing copy that appears to come from the customer does not, and people delete it before sending, which loses you the context you were trying to capture.
Where a WhatsApp link earns its place
A website chat button is the highest-volume placement for most businesses, and the reason is friction: a phone number printed on a page requires the visitor to copy it, switch app, paste, and start a chat. A link collapses that to one tap.
An Instagram or TikTok bio is the second, because those platforms allow exactly one link and a WhatsApp chat converts better than a homepage for a business that sells through conversation. Email signatures work for the same reason. A Google Business Profile can carry the link as the website or appointment URL, which puts it in front of people searching for you by name.
Click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram use the same mechanism natively, and the pre-filled message is doing real work there — it tells you which ad the conversation came from without asking the customer anything.
Shortening a WhatsApp link, and the trade-off nobody mentions
wa.me is already short, so shortening is usually about appearance in print or about tracking rather than length. If you do shorten, use a service you control or pay for. A free shortener that disappears takes every printed menu, poster and business card with it, and a QR code encoding that short link becomes a dead sticker on a shopfront.
The safer pattern for anything printed is to encode the wa.me link directly rather than a shortened one. For digital placements where you want per-channel tracking, a shortener or a redirect on your own domain gives you click counts that wa.me does not.
A different way to get the same information without any shortener: vary the pre-filled message per placement. "Hi, I saw your Instagram post" and "Hi, I found you on Google" arrive in your inbox already labelled.
What a link cannot do
A click-to-chat link starts one conversation, initiated by the person who taps it. It is not a way to message many people — for that you are choosing between the free WhatsApp Business app broadcast lists, capped at 256 contacts and delivering only to people who saved your number, and the WhatsApp Business Platform, which has no cap and reaches anyone who opted in.
A link also does not tell you anything on its own. If you need to know which page, ad or placement produced a conversation, that has to be built in — through the pre-filled message, a tracked redirect, or the entry-point data the Business Platform records automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?
A wa.me link (e.g. https://wa.me/919876543210) opens a WhatsApp chat with a specific number when clicked. You can add ?text= to pre-fill a message, making it easier for customers to contact you.
Does the recipient need to have my number saved?
No. Click-to-chat links work even if the recipient has not saved your number. The chat opens directly on their WhatsApp app or WhatsApp Web.
Can I use this link in Instagram bio?
Yes. WhatsApp links work perfectly in Instagram bio, Facebook posts, email signatures, website buttons, and Google Ads.
Is this the official WhatsApp link format?
Yes. The wa.me format is the official short link format provided by Meta/WhatsApp for click-to-chat functionality.
Can I add a pre-filled message?
Yes. Add a message in the optional field and it will appear pre-typed in the customer's chat box when they click your link — reducing friction.
How do I find my country code?
India is +91, UAE is +971, USA is +1, UK is +44. Enter the full number without + or spaces. For India: 91XXXXXXXXXX.
How do I add a WhatsApp link to my website?
Generate the link, then use it as the href of a button or a floating chat icon: <a href="https://wa.me/919876543210">Chat on WhatsApp</a>. It needs no script and no plugin, because it is an ordinary link. Add a pre-filled message with ?text= so the enquiry arrives with context, and place it where the visitor has already decided to act — next to prices, on the contact page, at the end of a product description.
What is the URL for WhatsApp?
For chatting with a specific number it is https://wa.me/ followed by that number in full international format, for example https://wa.me/919876543210. The older official equivalent is https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=919876543210. If you mean WhatsApp on a computer, that is web.whatsapp.com, which is a different thing — it logs you into your own account rather than opening a chat with someone.
How do I shorten a WhatsApp link?
A wa.me link is already short, so shortening is usually about appearance in print or about getting click tracking. If you shorten, use a service you pay for or a redirect on your own domain — a free shortener that shuts down takes every printed poster, menu and QR code with it. For anything printed, encoding the wa.me link directly is safer.
Can I track which WhatsApp link a customer used?
Not from the link itself. The cheapest way is to vary the pre-filled message per placement — "Hi, I saw your Instagram post" versus "Hi, I found you on Google" — so conversations arrive already labelled. A tracked redirect on your own domain gives you click counts as well, and the WhatsApp Business Platform records the entry point automatically.
