What You Can Do with the WhatsApp Business API

The API unlocks capabilities impossible in the free app: broadcast marketing messages to your full opted-in list, automated message sequences (welcome → follow-up → re-order prompt), AI chatbot responses, shared team inbox for multiple agents, rich message templates with buttons and images, webhook integration with your CRM or booking system, and detailed analytics on delivery, opens, and conversions.

How to Get WhatsApp Business API Access

There are two ways: (1) Direct access via Meta's Cloud API — you apply directly through Meta Business Manager and manage everything yourself. Requires technical setup. (2) Via a Business Solution Provider (BSP) — companies like Reputoo are Meta-approved BSPs that give you API access through their platform with no-code tools, pre-built flows, and managed compliance. Most small businesses use a BSP because it's faster and requires no coding.

WhatsApp API Pricing

Meta charges per delivered message — it replaced per-conversation pricing on 1 July 2025. Rates vary by category and by the recipient's country: in India a marketing message costs ₹0.8631 and a utility or authentication message ₹0.115 on the July 1, 2026 rate card, before GST. Since 1 October 2026, free-form replies inside the 24-hour window are charged at the utility rate; only conversations opened from a click-to-WhatsApp ad or Facebook Page button stay free, for 72 hours. Your BSP may add a platform fee on top.

Message Templates and Approval

Business-initiated WhatsApp messages must use pre-approved message templates. Templates are submitted to Meta for approval (usually within minutes to 24 hours). Templates can include text, images, documents, and interactive buttons (quick replies, call-to-action links). Service messages responding to customer-initiated conversations can be free-form within 24 hours of the customer's last message.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get WhatsApp Business API access?

Through a BSP like Reputoo, you can get WhatsApp Business API access in 1–3 business days. Direct Meta Cloud API access requires Meta Business Manager verification (1–7 days depending on your business type). Reputoo handles the entire application process for you.

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

Access is free; messages are not. Meta charges per delivered message, by category and by the recipient's country, and since 1 October 2026 it charges for replies inside the 24-hour window too. A provider like Reputoo adds its own subscription on top; Reputoo passes Meta's charges through with no markup.

What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API?

The free WhatsApp Business app is for manual use by one person on one device. The API connects to software systems enabling automation, chatbots, bulk messaging, CRM integration, and multi-agent use. If you're managing more than 50 customer conversations per day or want automation, you need the API.

Can I use the WhatsApp Business API without a BSP?

Yes — Meta's Cloud API allows direct access without a BSP. However, you'll need developers to build your own chatbot, campaign tools, analytics, and inbox. For most businesses, working with a BSP like Reputoo (which provides all these as a ready-to-use platform) is faster and more cost-effective.

What businesses are not eligible for WhatsApp Business API?

Meta prohibits WhatsApp Business API use for: alcohol (direct-to-consumer), tobacco, gambling, pharmaceuticals, weapons, adult content, dating services, and cryptocurrencies. All other legitimate businesses can apply. Your business must be real and verifiable through Meta Business Manager.
